Offering easy access to quantum computing: That is the goal of the Industrial Quantum Computing Consulting and Testing Center Fraunhofer INQUBATOR. INQUBATOR aims to provide practical access to the important future technology of quantum computing, particularly for companies that are not yet established in the quantum ecosystem. This includes access to quantum computers from various manufacturers as well as the broad expertise of the four participating Fraunhofer Institutes.
Within INQUBATOR, companies can develop customized solutions and test the potential of quantum algorithms without having to invest in expensive hardware themselves. Thereby, the project offers especially SMEs and small businesses, which have previously been unable to overcome the relatively high entry barriers, a unique opportunity to tap into the potential of quantum computing.
INQUBATOR will focus in particular on identifying and evaluating new application-oriented use cases where the use of quantum computers promises a foreseeable advantage. Close cooperation with industry will enable the development of innovative solutions that will secure the competitiveness of the German economy. The INQUBATOR project will not only promote the use of quantum computing in industry but also expand the knowledge and IP base in Germany.
Industry partners are actively involved in the development of their use cases through workshops, trainings, and the opportunity to actively collaborate on the programming of the quantum computer, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of this technology and recognize its benefits for their specific requirements. Quantum computers are tested within a flexible framework that makes it possible to respond to the needs of companies and quickly put research results into practice.
The project will start by working on four initial use cases that have already been defined in consultation with selected industry partners. These first use cases from the fields of medicine, cyber security, insurance, and automotive cover important sectors of the economy and are intended to serve as a basis for attracting the interest of other companies. In addition, an open call for proposals will be conducted in the first half of 2026 to integrate at least eight additional use cases from various industries and attract new industry partners.
